Episode 108: Hostel Geeks – Part 2

Living Unconventionally Podcast Britany Felix
“I hope in one year I will say, ‘Oh my God. I was so naïve one year ago.’”

Today, I am continuing my conversation with Matt Kiefer from Hostel Geeks, a website dedicated to designating typically one 5-star eco-friendly hostel in every city based on certain criteria.

“It’s actually quite impressive to see how many great looking hostels are not quite on top of the game with the staff and the staff can make a big difference between a lousy stay, a good stay, or a fantastic great stay.” – Matt Kiefer

We dive into why he and his partner Anna originally started the business, how they determine if a hostel is “eco-friendly”, how they compare in price to other hostels, and how he uses the website to make money.

“Our website is just a side product. All our products are behind what we’re offering.” – Matt Kiefer

He also talks about why he thinks it’s a good thing that he has a lot of things he would do differently if he could go back and start the business all over again, why they are specifically not outlining long-terms plans for the business, and his advice for others looking to start a location independent business of their own.

“I love to say, ‘Don’t follow the money. The money will follow you if you’re good at what you’re doing.’ But, the truth is, that does not always work.” – Matt Kiefer
